Best diving in Africa & the Middle East

From Egypt to South Africa, the African continent is all about pure adventure. The Red Sea is still one of the best places you can dive in the world, while Eastern Africa is slowly making a name for itself on the scuba diving scene with destinations such as Mozambique, Tanzania or Madagascar. The destinations from the “Best diving in Africa & the Middle-East” list are featured on my World Dive Map.

Special notes:

  • You can find my personal favourites with the ♥ symbol
  • Destinations promoting unethical activities such as feeding and baiting have been excluded from this list.

Best diving in the Middle East & the Red Sea

Diving in the Middle-East is famous thanks to the diving spots of the Red Sea in Egypt and Jordan, especially Sharm-el-Sheikh with the Ras-Mohammed National Park or Dabah and its Blue Hole. Egypt is a great destination for scuba divers who love drift diving and colourful coral reefs. A little less known, you can also give a try at diving in South Turkey in the Mediterranean Sea.

The marine life in the Red Sea is mostly about manta rays, sharks, turtles and napoleon wrasse. It’s the right place to go for both beginners and experienced divers. Due to the water temperatures, regarding scuba gear, it is most common to scuba dive there in a 5 mm wetsuit. The best time of the year is often from April to October. The best dive sites can be reached by boat but there are many shore diving sites, especially around Dahab.

Best diving in Africa & the Indian Ocean

Diving in Africa is famous thanks to diving spots on its western coast such as the Canary Islands and Cape Verde, but also its southeastern coast with Mozambique and Tanzania. For instance, Madagascar is a great destination for scuba divers who love whale sharks and coral reefs. A little less known, you can also give a try at diving in Malawi Lake.

The marine life in the Indian Ocean is mostly about whale sharks, turtles and nudibranchs. It’s the right place to go for both beginners and experienced divers. Due to the water temperatures, regarding scuba gear, it is most common to scuba dive there in a 3 mm wetsuit. The best time of the year is often from August to November.

Note by being much more south, diving in South Africa involves diving in much coler water, so bringing a 7mm full wetsuit and a hood won’t be too much!
