Diving in the USA is one of the best in the Americas with famous diving spots such as Hawaii and Florida and famous dives such as the Molokini Crater in Hawaii and Key Largo in the Florida Keys. The United States are a great destination for scuba divers who love wreck diving. A little less known, you can also give a try at diving in California like in Monterey Bay or North Carolina from Wilmington.

The marine life in North America is mostly about turtles, manta rays, humpback whales, reef sharks and eagle rays but in cold water, it is more about kelp forests. It’s the right place to go for both beginners and experienced divers. Due to the water temperatures, regarding scuba gear, it is most common to scuba dive there in a 5 mm wetsuit or a dry suit. The best time of the year is often from April to November. The best dive sites can be reached by boat or from the shores.

Below you will find all my best scuba diving stories from diving in the USA. I share my top tips on how to organise your trip, my favourites dives, what is the best itinerary or how to do it without breaking the bank. From a travel budget point of view, the USA are a higher budget destination, so save up accordingly.

Scuba diving in Hawaii: my ultimate 2-week itinerary

“Are you getting married, Florine?”, “Did you go on honeymoon?”- “Whaaaat? Nooo…“ This is pretty much the type of conversation I had on and on, before and after my 2-week trip to Hawaii. The reason? The Hawaiian Archipelago seems such a fantasy destination beyond reach

Shore diving in Maui: Hawaii’s best-kept secret

Turtle Shore Diving Two Steps Refuge Scuba diving Big Island Hawaii

Shore diving in Honaunau, Big Island

It was my last dive in Hawaii after my manta ray night dive in Kona, but I didn’t know it yet when I entered the water. I was supposed to dive next at Old Airport in Kona, but as the weather deteriorated during the day,

Night dive with manta rays Kona Hawaii

Manta ray night dive in Kona, Hawaii

I heard and read many stories on how Kona became such a famous place for diving with manta rays at night, becoming a bucket-list dive for adventurous travellers eager to go diving in Hawaii. While I think diving in Maui is a better choice for

Scuba diving lava tube Hawaii

Diving in lava tubes in Hawaii: will you dare to do it?

To fly from Japan to Maui, I had to choose between flying via Oahu (Honolulu) and Big Island (Kona). Given the possibility of seeing lava flowing into the ocean or night diving with a ballet of manta rays, I decided I could give up on

Molokini-crater-maui

Should you snorkel or scuba dive in Molokini Crater, Hawaii?

Molokini Crater was the first dive site in Hawaii I added to my bucket list. The description of a semi-submerged crater of an ancient volcano was enough to get me thrilled about diving it. When I read that the uninhabited atoll was a State marine

The Carthaginian II : wreck diving in Maui

I had a thrill diving into the crater of Molokini, but the Carthaginian II was the only opportunity I had to go wreck diving while diving in Maui. If you go diving this shipwreck, you only need to walk to the Lahaina town centre marina
