Category: Diving in the USA

Diving in the USA is one of the best in the Americas with famous diving spots such as Hawaii and Florida and famous dives such as the Molokini Crater in Hawaii and Key Largo in the Florida Keys. The United States are a great destination for scuba divers who love wreck diving. A little less known, you can also give a try at diving in California like in Monterey Bay or North Carolina from Wilmington.

The marine life in North America is mostly about turtles, manta rays, humpback whales, reef sharks and eagle rays but in cold water, it is more about kelp forests. It’s the right place to go for both beginners and experienced divers. Due to the water temperatures, regarding scuba gear, it is most common to scuba dive there in a 5 mm wetsuit or a dry suit. The best time of the year is often from April to November. The best dive sites can be reached by boat or from the shores.

Below you will find all my best scuba diving stories from diving in the USA. I share my top tips on how to organise your trip, my favourites dives, what is the best itinerary or how to do it without breaking the bank. From a travel budget point of view, the USA are a higher budget destination, so save up accordingly.

2 weeks in Hawaii - Honaunau National Historical Park Big Island Hawaii

Scuba diving in Hawaii: my ultimate 2-week itinerary

“Are you getting married, Florine?”, “Did you go on honeymoon?” “Whaaaat? Nooo…“ This is pretty much the type of conversation I had on and on, before and after my 2 week trip to Hawaii. The reason? The Hawaiian Archipelago seems such a fantasy destination beyond reach that most people believed it had to be for my big day. For sure, seen from Europe, going

Turtle Mala Wharf shore diving Lahaina Maui Hawaii

Shore diving in Maui: Hawaii’s best-kept secret

The Hawaiian Archipelago is full of bucket list dives with exciting adventures such as diving in the crater of a volcano or night diving with manta rays, but all of these scuba diving trips come at a high price tag. To be clear, I have never paid so much for a dive. At the same time, I was not expecting I could go shore diving

Night dive with manta rays Kona Hawaii

Manta ray night dive in Kona, Hawaii

I heard and read many stories on how Kona became such a famous place about diving with manta rays at night, becoming a bucket-list dive for adventurous scuba divers worldwide. While I think the island of Maui is a better choice for avid scuba divers, Big Island is getting all the spotlight with the manta ray night dive in Kona. In any case, floodlights

Scuba diving lava tube Hawaii

Diving in lava tubes in Hawaii: will you dare to do it?

To fly from Japan to Maui, I had to make a choice between flying via Oahu (Honolulu) or Big Island (Kona). Given the possibility of seeing lava flowing into the ocean or scuba diving at night with a ballet of manta rays, I decided I could give up on Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbour Memorial in Oahu this time. After 11 days to explore

Should you snorkel or scuba dive in Molokini Crater, Hawaii?

Molokini Crater was the first dive site of Hawaii I added onto my bucket-list. The description of a semi-submerged crater of an ancient volcano was enough to get me thrilled about diving it. When I read the uninhabited atoll was a State marine sanctuary with excellent visibility, it became my primary target for the day I would make it to Hawaii. Yet, the price

Scuba diving road trip in Florida: 15 Things you need to know

If you enjoyed my posts about Miami, the Florida Keys and the Northern Florida Springs, you may now wonder how to organise such an adventure. If travelling to the United States doesn’t pose any particular issue, there were a few things I needed to be careful to make my trip enjoyable while avoiding to break the bank! During the two weeks of my adventure,

Scuba diving Florida - Plongée Floride

Springs in Florida : diving in Crystal River and the Devil’s Den

To drive the 500 km/311 mi. from Miami to Crystal River, after a tropical week in the Florida Keys, it had to be for something exciting.  I only had 2 days ahead of me before driving back south to get the best glimpse of diving the springs in Northern Florida. I made the most of my time with an early morning swim with the manatees of

Diving in Devil’s Den, Florida

My scuba diving adventure to the Devil’s den in Florida started with a tiny picture on Pinterest. When I saw the picture of the underground spring it directly enticed to put it on my itinerary to Florida no matter what. The first time I went down the stairs taking me to this prehistorical cave, the view on this striking blue natural pool was beyond expectation. This video
